The Thurgood Marshall College Fund and Las Vegas Sands Corporation have partnered for the second consecutive year to offer the Sands Hospitality Immersion Program (SHIP), a hospitality immersion experience exclusively for Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) students.
Fifteen students from 10 different HBCUs have been selected to embark on the enriching four-day experience June 16-22 in Las Vegas, Nevada that provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the hospitality, tourism, and entertainment industry.
Spearheaded by the Harrah College of Hospitality’s Sands Center for Professional Development at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, the program is a robust investment in nurturing the potential of young talents from traditionally underrepresented groups. They are not only exposed to the wide array of career opportunities within the hospitality sector but also provided with essential tools and networks to succeed in this dynamic field.
The selected students represent a variety of majors and are poised to dive deep into the vibrant world of hospitality, interact with leading professionals in the field, and explore firsthand the inner workings of integrated resorts, convention spaces, and sports venues. The program features on-campus learning sessions facilitated by college faculty and industry speakers, along with engaging activities like a cooking competition overseen by the college’s executive chefs.
Sands launched SHIP as part of its broader Sands Cares global community engagement efforts. It is among several education and workforce development initiatives undertaken by the company that encompass partnerships with higher education institutions, scholarship funding, and on-site and industry-supported training programs for students and professionals. The Sands Cares goal is to create a more diverse and skilled workforce in the hospitality industry by empowering the next generation of leaders, driving innovation and excellence, and providing valuable opportunities for career advancement.
