Grambling State’s Digital Library Makes HBCU History

Grambling State University (GSU) has made history with the opening of their Digital Library and Learning Commons. Not only is this landmark facility the first digital library ever established at a Historically Black College or University (HBCU) in the US, but it is also the first digital library in the state of Louisiana.

The ribbon-cutting ceremony on August 22 celebrated the culmination of a project that began in 2017 under the leadership of former GSU President Rick Gallot. With support from alumni, faculty, students, and University of Louisiana System officials, the $16 million project has materialized into a 50,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art complex designed to redefine academic and community engagement at Grambling State.

The new space replaces the A.C. Lewis Memorial Library, which had served the university since 1962. The new library features over 150 computer stations, 17,000 square feet of study area, and versatile rooms for events and seminars.

The facility is equipped with an array of technological tools, including laser and etching machines, a Cricut maker, and other advanced equipment designed to enhance student projects and support creativity. It also boasts a large lecture hall, archival collections, and dedicated spaces for gaming and collaborative study. Students can borrow a laptop, access over 100 specialized databases, explore electronic references, and check out ebooks from various collections.

A unique feature of the new library is its custom wallcovering, which celebrates the accomplishments of GSU graduates who have made significant impacts globally, underscoring the institution’s rich legacy and forward-facing vision.

Current GSU President Dr. Martin Lemelle Jr. played a pivotal role in the planning and development of the Digital Library during his tenure as Executive Vice President. “We fought for this project because we know it’s important and we fight for Dear Ole Grambling because we believe in the boundless potential of every student who walks through our doors,” he said in his remarks during the opening ceremony. “We’re building a future where every student can excel, and we are fighting to ensure that Grambling remains a beacon of hope, resilience and excellence. We’re building a bridge between the past and the future, and we are fighting to keep the legacy of our flame burning bright.”

The Digital Library not only enhances GSU’s academic resources but also establishes it as a hub of innovation and community engagement in North Louisiana. This significant leap forward for Grambling State University sets a new standard for educational and technological advancement within the HBCU community and beyond.
