Manhattan Hair Salon Sued for Pregnancy Discrimination

A recently filed lawsuit alleges the owners of an upscale Manhattan hair salon violated federal law when they fired an assistant colorist and rescinded her promotion to their Greenwich location after finding out she was pregnant. According to the suit, filed by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission recently in New York, around the beginning of August last year, New Jersey resident Jessica Manno had been working as an assistant colorist at Warren Tricomi's salon at the Plaza Hotel in New York City for six months when the owner, Joel Warren, offered her a promotion to colorist at the Greenwich salon. About three weeks after she was offered the promotion, Manno informed Warren that she was pregnant. According to the lawsuit, filed Sept. 29 in federal court in the Southern District of New York, Warren told Manno that the news was "a lot to digest," and that he would have to discuss it with the other owners. Manno said she attempted to contact Warren several times to discuss her start date at the Greenwich salon, but he did not return her calls. The salon then fired Manno around Sept. 1, 2010.
