When President Obama spoke for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act at the annual Human Rights Campaign fundraising dinner on Oct. 1, he furiously criticized the Republican candidates for not defending a gay American soldier. That remark was quickly followed with President Obama's support of the repeal of the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
