California Latina Student Faced Discrimination From Middle School |
A lawsuit was filed July 20 against the Bear Valley Unified School District in Big Bear Lake, CA on behalf of a Latina middle-school student who alleges that her teacher made racially offensive remarks, humiliated her and inhibited her education. The lawsuit, filed by the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, claims Coral Aviles was harassed by a Big Bear Middle School teacher because she was Mexican. The suit alleges that school officials did not take the appropriate response in handling the situation. Bear Valley school officials declined to comment on July 21, saying they had not yet been served with the lawsuit. The teacher apologized in front of the class after making the alleged remarks, said Nancy Ramirez, Aviles’ attorney and the western regional counsel for MALDEF. But that response, Ramirez said, was “completely inadequate.” Click here to read more from the Los Angeles Times.
