Gay-Rights Advocates Rally in New York |
Roughly 1,000 gay-rights advocates rallied at the New York State Capitol in Albany on May 9, hoping to convince the GOP-controlled Senate this is the year to make same-sex marriage legal in New York. While the Democrat-led Assembly has passed legislation twice before, the Senate voted it down in 2009, when Senate Democrats had a 32-30 edge over Republicans. No Republicans voted for it, and a number of Democrats were opposed to the bill. Power in the Senate is 32-30 in favor of the GOP now, but more pressure has been brought to bear this year by Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who has made passing a same-sex marriage bill one of his top three priorities for the remaining weeks of the legislative session. Click here to read more.
