Anti-Bullying, Non-Discrimination Bills Face Shaky Paths |
Members of Congress are introducing a flurry of bills this week designed to address bullying and harassment of students, including LGBT students, and timed to coincide with a major White House conference on bullying prevention March 10. Also, President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama, in preparation for the event, posted a video March 9 to the StopBullying.gov Facebook page, reaffirming their commitment to addressing the issue. Bullying "affects every single young person in our country," the president said. "Putting a stop to bullying is a responsibility we all share." Bills aimed at doing that died in committee last session, however. And one LGBT leader worries that the anti-bullying legislation does not go far enough to provide effective protections.
