Police Arrest University of Missouri Student for Racist Graffiti

A second racially-charged incident in a year on the University of Missouri campus has officials and some students irate. At 9:30 p.m. on February 11, officers from the University of Missouri Police Department arrested 18-year-old Benjamin Elliott on suspicion of second-degree property damage, a Class D felony because of hate crimes sentencing provisions. In a statement, MU Chancellor Brady Deaton said he was “deeply offended” by a racist slur that was discovered on a sculpture in front of Hatch Hall. Witnesses said black graffiti, which was removed immediately, included the N-word. In February 2010, two young men lined cotton balls in front of the Gaines Oldham Black Culture Center on campus.
