Senate Confirms Lesbian For Full Term on EEOC |
Democrats in the U.S. Senate used the tail end of the lame-duck session to confirm an openly homosexual woman to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). Chai Feldblum, a law professor at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C., and, according to Human Rights Campaign (HRC), the first openly homosexual person to serve on the EEOC, was confirmed as a commissioner December 22 by unanimous consent on the day the Senate adjourned. While President Obama had originally nominated Feldblum to the post last September, her nomination was put on hold over concerns from at least one Senator, prompting the President to give Feldblum a recess appointment in March 2010. As a newly approved appointee she will serve on the EEOC through July 2013. Click here to read more.
