California Gubernatorial Candidate Says She Would Defend Proposition 8

California Republican gubernatorial candidate Meg Whitman said Aug. 20 that she would defend voter-approved Proposition 8, which prohibits same-sex marriage, if she becomes governor next year. The announcement put Whitman at odds with both California Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and Attorney General Jerry Brown, Whitman's Democratic rival in the California governor's race. Both Schwarzenegger and Brown have refused to defend the law against court challenges. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has taken up the issue after Chief Judge Vaughn Walker of the U.S. District Court of Northern California declared the measure unconstitutional earlier this month.
