Muslim Woman Sues New Jersey Hospital for Religious Discrimination

Rona Mohammedi, a Muslim woman from Basking Ridge, NJ, checked into the Somerset Medical Center in Somerville, NJ the night of Feb. 11, 2010 after experiencing severe chest pains. Officials at the hospital determined she needed an electrocardiogram, but because she believes it is her religious duty to maintain modesty before strange men, she asked for a female to conduct the test and refused to have a man apply wires to her chest, shoulders and wrists, which an EKG calls for. Instead of heeding her request, officials let her languish in the emergency room for five hours until 3:10 a.m., when her husband sought a transfer. Mohammedi is suing the hospital for discrimination and violating the Patient Bill of Rights. Click here to read more.
